I tend to have my forts based around a very top heavy pattern. W=wall,F=floor,C=channel,B=bridge raises east,G=bridge raises east,D=door,L=levers It gives me a more manageable look on which level I would do exploratory mining for the metals I need.Īnd also breaking through the cavern will give me an idea on where to setup my entrance and my barracks, and at least put some cage traps outside while I seal it up with an Air Lock entry: Outside Cavern Inside Fortress This then "starts" the moss growth on the area I dug for my more secure animal pasture. One advantage to breaking through the first cavern is that it enables moss (grass) and fungus (tree) to grow on below ground soils. I also started digging 3x3 room for my dwarves, but I realize there is very good merit in just having 1x4 rooms / fractal designs / windmill / greek cross bedroom designs. I get caught up in planning on the "future" before my capacity to make them happen ends up where I dug large unused areas. But, then, I also intend to just shut the drawbridge and wait for the goblins to leave, so I guess I won't really need to fight them much.Ĭan you tell I really have no idea what I'm doing? Yes? Thought so. So, my question is: How fast do you go down z levels? Should I be doing this faster? I feel like I should get everything else in perfect order before i start droppign z levels rapidly, but I also might still be preparing when I get Goblin sieged at this rate. and 38 actual dwarves.) I think I've made enough bedrooms. (So I have a capacity for about 300 dwarves now. (It's getting REALLY REALLY wide.) I think I've probably carved out enough bedrooms on each z level for maybe 100 dwarves. I'm putting almost all my work into making a giant horizontal fortress. (No, I don't have any metal yet.) Then it occurs to me that perhaps I'm doing this too slowly. I've been in this fortress for almost a year and a half and have only gone to z + 3. I'm treating going down z levels as something that shouldn't be done a lot.
